Climate and weather
Malta and Gozo have a typically Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers, a warm spring and autumn, and a short, cool, but wetter, winter. The heat in summer can be intense, so if you're planning a visit in high summer look for a property rental with air conditioning! But in practice spring and autumn are generally the prime times for everyone except dedicated sun worshipers to visit. Winters can be pleasant too with their cooler temperatures and lower self-catering rental prices. For the current weather check out Malta Weather» where there's also more detailed information on the climate in general.
Best/quietest time to stay
The period April to June is good time to stay as tourist numbers are lower while accommodation rates are still cheaper.
Water
Much of the tap water in Malta and Gozo is desalinated sea water, it's OK for brushing teeth and washing and it will not make you ill if you drink it, but it's slightly salty so you may prefer bottled drinking water. However, if you're self-catering, this slightly salty water can be perfect for cooking pasta and vegetables!
Shopping
If you're arriving at your Maltese self-catering villa on a Sunday (or on public holidays) bring a few essential supplies as shops generally don't open. Or look for a property that offers a 'welcome pack' that will tide you over until the shops open.
Malta or Gozo?
There are less self-catering properties in Malta than in Gozo and those book up quickly, so early booking is essential in high season. Gozo holiday villas and farmhouses tend to be a little cheaper than those in Malta.
