What is a Hotel of Character or a Boutique Hotel?

The 'character' in our Character Hotels list comes from a variety of features; it may be the building itself – perhaps it's a historic or listed building, or perhaps its a fabulous piece of more modern architecture. It may be decided by the hotel decor and furnishings, the range of services on offer, or it may come from the hotel location – but more than likely it will be a combination of all of these.

The list includes independently run properties, family owned hotels, traditional guesthouse hotels, historic country house hotels, noteworthy boutique/design hotels and luxury retreat centres, as well as a selection of the most outstanding hotels from the chains and booking engines.

We look for charm, atmosphere and local character; some will be small, hard-to-find hidden gems; others will be grand buildings that have retained their character despite their size.
