INTERESTING FACTS |
Oasthouses or hop kilns are distinctive conical, funnel-shaped (or sometimes square) towers or 'roundels' used as kilns for drying hops for beer brewing.
They were usually two or three storeys where the the hops were spread out to be dried by hot air from a wood or charcoal kiln at the bottom. The distinctive conical roof was needed to create the draught for the fire, with the wooden cowl at the top pivoting to adjust the airflow.
Oasts are found in the English hop growing counties which include Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Herefordshire, and Worcestershire. Many have now been converted into living accommodation including Oasthouse B&Bs and holiday homes for rent. |
