WALES: First steps in calligraphy
A beginners course offering weekends learning calligraphy by the sea, with tuition at Bull Bay on Anglesey in North Wales.
This course has been designed for people new to calligraphy, or for anyone who's attempted to learn from a book and got stuck! The residential weekend inckludes 2-days of tuition and all necessary materials. En-suite accommodation with breakfast is in the Trecastell Hotel. These courses are run by Janet Smith, a professional calligrapher and lettering artist.
Translated literally, 'calligraphy' means 'beautiful writing', from the Greek word 'kalligraphia'. The residential courses, workshops and holidays listed here are usually run by professional lettering artists and calligraphers, who want to pass on this beautiful and elegant skill in handwriting, lettering and penmanship.
We include practitioners using many different calligraphic styles and scripts: English, Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Roman etc., and who provide instruction at a recreational level for all abilities, from raw beginner to those with previous experience.
In addition to straightforward calligraphy, we are also happy to list recreational courses on illumination and gilding techniques, and even courses dealing with palaeography (or paleography), the study of ancient handwriting.
