The Sangkhlaburi Jungle Trek – in aid of the Pattaya Orphanage

Spend 6 days trekking, bamboo rafting and elephant riding through the rugged jungles of Thailand near the Burmese border.

The challenge includes a three day trek in the Thung Yai Nareusan Wildlife Sanctuary, one of Thailand's largest protected areas and one of the last natural habitats in Thailand for the tiger. The final day's hiking will take you to the Songkaria River and this journey will be on bamboo rafts.

After a rest day in Sangkhla you will then continue the challenge by trekking along the route of the infamous 'Death Railway', built by the Japanese army during the 2nd World War using Allied prisoners. A half day kayak journey down the River Kwai itself follows; using single person boats or two person kayaks for the 'uninitiated'.

The ninth day begins with a short trek by elephant before rejoining the river on its peaceful way through the spectacular scenery of Sai Yok National Park. You will then transfer to the nearby town of Kanchanaburi.

"With special thanks to Hamish Chalmers, from Gecko Travel, who made the whole trip, educational, challenging and very enjoyable, which at times where difficult conditions. He behaved with good grace, and respect throughout the trip trying to cater to many different needs." Geraldine, February 2002 Jungle Trek

Once the challenge is complete, the group will head off to Pattaya and spend a day visiting the Pattaya Orphanage projects to see how much their contribution will permanently change the children's lives.

"I must say how impressed both myself and Geraldine were, with the orphanage and how remarkable the children are. The amount of organisation and funding required for this worthwhile cause cannot be appreciated, without having experienced it first hand. I am still touched by the enthusiasm of the children and their eagerness to learn and taking a chance in trusting others. If it wasn't difficult enough to deal with being orphaned, they also have to cope with varying degrees of disabilities, a very humbling experience." Tina, February 2002 Jungle Trek
