The Nile Bike Ride – in aid of Mencap

16th – 23rd February and 24th February – 3rd March 2003

Join Mencap and share a week of laughter, team spirit and achievement as you cycle along the banks of the River Nile.

The challenge begins in Esna a small, busy farming town south of Luxor. Its main attraction is the Graceo-Roman Temple of Khnum built by the reign of Roman Emperor Claudius. We wake up on our boat, which will be our base camp for the week ahead and set of south along the west bank of the Nile towards Edfu.

On Day 3 we travel from Edfu to Aswan which takes us in to the desert. We cross the Nile by small launches and go for a short cruise around the islands at Aswan to meet up with our boat.

On Day 4 we cycle from Aswan to the Low Dam and then up to the High Dam. We return down the hill to the island of Philae and then to the boat for a late lunch. We spend the afternoon on board and sail to Kom Ombo. This evening there is a chance to visit the Temple at Kom Ombo.

Day 5 is the longest day of cycling which take us north on the east bank of the Nile towards Esna. The last day a cycling takes us along the west bank towards Luxor and we pass through agricultural villages en route. After 63km we have a break at the Colossi of Memnon followed by a ride up to the Valley of the Kings to tour some of the tombs. It's then back on our bikes for the last stretch towards the Nile where the finishing line is set up. After the celebrations a ferry takes us back to the boat for a well deserved rest. The last day is free for relaxation and sightseeing in and around Luxor.

'The combination of three things; camaraderie, Egypt itself and the sense of achievement have made this an unbelievable week! Thanks to everyone'
Marcus Sedgwick, West Sussex, Nile 2001

The price of the trip is £1,143 (approx.) which includes flights and all internal travel, along with bikes, accommodation, meals, water and refreshments, medics and guides. There is a minimum sponsorship pledge of £2,100.
