Fitness holiday or boot camp – what's the difference?
This section of Travel-Quest deals with conventional fitness holidays which will tend to offer equipment based gym work, fitness classes such as circuit training and aerobics, plus other exercise activities that can range from gentle yoga to high powered mountain biking. Classes will often be held in custom gyms and training spaces. Some fitness breaks will provide personal trainers who will create tailored exercise regimes for guests. The style of instruction will probably be based less on compulsion and more on encouragement and motivation.
These days the difference between a fitness holiday and a 'bootcamp' has become blurred, mainly because some providers use the latter term for 'softer' style holidays – we therefore recommend you take a look at that section too!
Instructor qualifications on fitness breaks and holidays
How can you be sure your holiday fitness instructor is fit to instruct? There are a lot of reasons to check out the qualifications of the people running these sort of breaks, not least of which is for reassurance that their instruction will not cause injury, you'll also want to know that they're properly insured.
There are a lot of different fitness and gym instructor qualifications out there; some are general, some are specific to particular sports or activities (e.g. yoga or cycling).
In the UK there's no mandatory requirement for instructors to be qualified at all – although most reputable providers will ensure that they are! And once you start looking at fitness holidays abroad the situation becomes even less clear as it adds foreign qualifications to the mix.
Our advice is to always go to a providers 'about us' info and check the qualifications listed – if this information is not on their website ask them to provide it. Also check that the people listed will be the ones actually taking the classes and look for reassurances that any unlisted instructors will also be properly qualified. Be particularly vigilant if you are doing a long-haul fitness holiday to a country where there may be less controls.
