ENGLAND: Ayurvedic spa retreat in Kent
Small is beautiful at this unique Ayurvedic spa retreat in Kent, where qualified therapists will provide a range of Ayurvedic-style healing, preventive and beauty therapies. These can include 'Panchakarma' (for detoxification); a range of interesting massages such as 'Udwarthanam' (for melting away subcutaneous fat) and 'Chakra Prayer' (for de-stressing), and special facials such as the 'Ayurim' or the 'Santhosham Indian Face Massage'.
The spa is housed in rustic, barn-style buildings in a beautiful garden next to a lake – a very tranquil setting. The spa offers day packages, but if you want a very select longer retreat it also has just two residential guest rooms for overnight guests.
Healing waters in a beautiful historic city. We can't create a spa breaks page without mention of our home town spa. Travel-Quest is based in Bath home to Thermae Bath Spa, the only natural thermal spa in the UK. It's all about the water here, Thermae Bath Spa is fed by natural thermal springs that have been used as healing waters since 863BC.
A basic entry will get you use of two pools with jacuzzis and water jets, (one of them open-air, roof-top and with amazing views of the city), use of the aroma steam rooms and waterfall shower. Then there is an excellent range of treatments, including some unusual ones like the Vichy Rainforest Shower & Hydro Massage, the Kraxen Stove (Alpine hay chamber treatment) or special Mums-to-be treatments.
Review and recommendations
Having tried it several times (someone has to do the testing!) we're happy to say we like our spa. We do have one or two niggles but that's all they are – for example we'd love there to be more obvious visual difference between the steam rooms because they all look the same and it can be hard to tell which one you've already been as you emerge from the rainforest shower outside and we did have a rather long wait in the restaurant on one of our visits – on the other hand we just love the waterfall jets in the pools, who needs a massage after that!
A few tips:
• For the best views, try to time your visit to the roof-top pool for dusk, so you can enjoy the city as it lights up for the evening and, with luck, also get a great sunset.
• Don't be afraid of the rain, its an incredible sensation to sit in the warm water of the open-air pool as the heavens open!
• It can get very busy in high season and at weekends so try and go on a weekday and in the morning (unless you're after the Twilight experience).
• If you're planning on visiting the historic Roman Baths on the same day, do the Roman one's first, you'll be too relaxed after your spa!
