What is decoupage?

The name Découpage comes from the French word découper meaning 'to cut' and a decoupager takes part in the artistic pursuit of cutting out paper (and other materials) and gluing these cut items onto a hard surface. The retreats, workshops and courses listed cover techniques for decorating items with images cut from decorative paper, illustrations and printed sources and then lacquered or varnished.

Cut images may be simply pasted onto paper, card or board to create a flat picture; but can also be applied to 3D objects such as glassware, ceramics and furniture. They can be applied to a range of materials such as papers, card, canvas, wood, ceramics, glass, terra cotta, metal and even eggs. The cut items need not be restricted to paper (wallpaper, wrapping paper, magazine images, tissue, napkins, stickers etc.), but can also be foils, fabric and even natural items like leaves, grasses, petals and flowers. Additional art and craft skills may also be used, particularly on furniture, including painting, special paint effects, stamping, stenciling and guilding.

Decoupaging tips:
• To make things easier when cutting out move the paper rather than the scissors.

• Nail and cuticle scissors are great for cutting out fine detail and a scalpel or craft knife and cutting mat can also be useful.

• Try doing decoupage with decorative fabrics as well as paper.

• Keeping your scissors at right angles to your body will allow you to see both sides of a cut.
