How to become an Eco-Tourist
If you're serious about ecotourism then we recommend taking a look at The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) website – TIES is the oldest and largest ecotourism association in the world, and is is part of the International Tourism Collective, a non-profit organisation which aims to promote ecotourism globally.
As well as helping to support and educate the organisations that provide Eco-tours, TIES can provide ordinary travellers and students with an excellent definition of ecotourism as well as news, tips, a list of Eco-friendly destinations and an opportunity to join the organisation.
Ethical travel, green eco holidays and ecotourism
This section lists travel companies who offer green, ethical ecotourism holidays – by which we mean low impact tourism, usually to relatively untouched natural areas of the world, that is sensitive to its impact on nature and which strives to conserve the environment and improve the wellbeing of the local population.
This might include aspects such as: working with and providing employment for local people; measures to minimise the impact of tourism (such as the use of green transport or building with local materials in traditional styles); energy saving measures and environmentally friendly practices designed to help preserve resources (such as the use of solar and wind power, use of organic foods etc.); direct contribution (either financial or practical) to conservation, cultural awareness etc.
It might also include working with, membership of, or adherence to the guidelines of relevant organisations such as Tourism Concern, Conservation International, The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), Climate Care Trust etc.
Travel companies, businesses and charities listed in this eco-tourism section must have a stated ecotourism policy displayed on their website.
