Our definition of Nordic ski touring
Our Nordic ski touring section focuses on tours away from groomed tracks and trails, using Nordic free-heel skis (rather than Alpine, Randonnée, x-country or Telemark style touring skis and boots).
This style of touring uses a range of Nordic ski equipment, from traditional Nordic touring skis, which are similar to track x-country skis with little or no side cut; to backcountry Nordic skis which are wider and may have some shaping. Nordic touring skis will be 'double-cambered' to allow for a wax pocket (or a patterned 'fish scale' grip section) for climbing the generally rolling terrain encountered on these types of tours. The more robust touring skis may have metal edges.

The travel-quest Nordic ski touring holidays and tours section lists holidays, vacations, courses, weekends, tours and short breaks where the main activity and focus is on ski touring using Nordic skiing equipment, mainly in the backcountry and away from groomed cut trails. This will sometimes be Nordic day touring from a fixed base, or may be Nordic hut-to-hut touring in rolling, undulating terrain suitable for Nordic skis, climbing with wax or with 'fish-scale' bases. We have separate sections for cross-country track skiing, telemarking and Alpine ski touring.
