Some of the retreats listed here are pricey – so our suggestion for a cheap weight loss retreat, or for people not into working out, is to simply walk!
Take a walking holiday – book a country cottage» and take to the hills; hike the coastal path or stride through country lanes. Walking is a great way to start an exercise regime, burn off those excess calories and can be done virtually anywhere.
It's reckoned that walking actively will, on average, burn around 230-260 calories per hour – that will vary of course, depending on your start weight, how fast you walk and where you're walking (hills are good!). The key thing is to walk 'actively' and to make sure you burn more calories than you consume
And speaking of consuming, to make this DIY weight loss holiday effective we recommend you combine your walking with a healthy eating plan – exercise on it's own will not do the job! So fill your holiday cottage with healthy low calorie food, a good diet cookbook and no alcohol! And promise yourself not to sneak out to the pub or order in a takeaway, better still make sure your cottage is so remote that these temptations don't exist!

Compared to a customised weight loss retreat your DIY weight loss holiday will undoubtedly take more willpower, but just think of the pounds (sterling) you'll be saving, as well as the ones you hope to shed!
You could of course take an organised walking holiday» instead, but make sure you can control the diet side of things, perhaps going with one of the smaller companies where you can walk from a fixed base and arrange your low-calorie eating plan directly with the organisers.
Or you could really up the ante and try Nordic walking» – a much more active whole-body style which can burn off something like 45% more calories than ordinary walking. Get some instruction so you learn how to use the poles properly to get the full benefits.
