SEARCH TIPS: HORSE TRAIL RIDING

Horse trail riding: a definition

Trail rideOn this page we define trail riding as multi-day horse riding trips, often long distance, that take horse and rider on a journey from place-to-place. The route will be off-road and will usually follow bridleways (bridle paths), off-road trails and forest tracks. Horseback trailriding holidays may be guided or self-guided. On most, suitable horses will be provided as part of the package, although some trips specifically cater for riders using their own mounts.

Overnight accommodation on a ride will usually be in a different place each night, this may be in bunk houses, B&Bs, guest houses, guest ranches/farms, or hotels; in some remote areas camping may be also be used. Luggage may be carried in saddle bags on the horse, by pack ponies/horses that travel with the riders, or may be forwarded on by vehicle each day.

Trail riding is sometimes referred to as hacking and, in North America in particular, it might also be called a pack trip or an inn-to-inn tour.

In this Directory we use the terms horse trekking and pony trekking to refer to a horse riding holiday where the trails are used for day rides from a fixed base – check out what's on offer here.
