SPAIN VILLA SEARCH & BOOKING TIPS

• High season in Spain is July and August and villa rates are highest at this time, but it's usually plenty warm enough outside of these times (particularly in the South) and you may get good deals.

• Remember that, in many areas, high season temperatures can hit up to 40° – check your villa has air-conditioning.

• It's worth remembering that villas right beside the beach can be up to double the price of similar ones just a few 100m inland.

• If you're booking direct with the owner, remember that many villa owners don't live in Spain themselves, so check that there's a local contact (preferably English speaking) in the event of an emergency.

• Rural Spanish properties are sometimes referred to as 'casa rusticas'; these 'houses in the country' are often rather basic and sparely fitted out, but they can be excellent value. Confusingly a few town or city house rentals are also called 'casa rural'; this is to enable them to qualify for grants, or just to emphasize that they are houses rather than an apartments.

• Worth considering are aparthotels, which are hotels offering mostly self-catering accommodation; usually found in resorts.

• You may find Spanish 'fincas' or 'cortijos' to rent, these are usually rural farmhouses; generally old properties, often full of character, converted for use as self-catering holiday homes.
