SEARCH TIPS: WESTERN HORSEBACK RIDING HOLIDAYS

Cowgirl riding Western styleThis Travel-Quest section lists horseback riding holidays, residential courses and breaks offering horse riding instruction, trail rides and horseback tours in western style on western trained horses. Horses will be neck reined and will be ridden with western tack and saddles.

Western horseback riding is the particular style of North American riding which developed from the fighting and ranching traditions of the Spanish Conquistadors. Both the equipment used in Western riding and the riding style itself evolved to meet the needs of working cowboys in the West of America.

The differences between English and Western riding
Firstly there is the saddle: compared to a English saddle, the Western one distributes weight more evenly over a horse's back to enable horse and rider to counterbalance the weight of a roped cow. It's also designed to be comfortable for many hours riding in rough, wild country. Western horses are also neck reined (so they will change direction with light rein pressure on the neck) because it's necessary to control the horse one handed to enable the cowboy to use a lasso/lariat with the other hand.

There's a difference in the horses too, with Western horses being more compact and able to maintain steady travel over a long period, but also capable of short bursts of speed when required to pursue cattle.
