ENGLAND: Devon
Whatever your fishing style, Devon has plenty to offer, with excellent coarse, game and sea fishing all available. The county is blessed with plenty of natural coastline for sea and shoreline fishing; numerous fine rivers and streams for the river angler; and excellent fisheries, lakes and waters for coarse fishing.
Coarse fishermen can expect to find the usual species: carp, bream, roach, rudd, tench and perch and pike.
River anglers will come across: roach, dace and bream, and those into game or fly fishing will find good catches of wild brown trout, sea trout and salmon in many Devon rivers (of note are the rivers Lyn, Exe, Tamar, Tavy, Teign, Axe, Taw, Dart, Torridge and their tributaries).
Devon offers a choice of coastline, north and south, both with good sea fishing – both coasts are good for bass and pollack, while the northern coast is good for rays and smooth-hounds and the south for conger eels or bull huss. Popular Devon sea fishing destinations include the areas around: Torquay, Brixham, Plymouth, Saunton Sands, Woolacombe, Baggy Point, Hartland Point, Ilfracombe and Westward Ho!
In this category our focus is very much on the fishing, we actively hunt out holiday accommodation with a reputation for offering fishermen the facilities they want.
Easy proximity to fishing is the primary ingredient of course, preferably on-site or at least very close by. This may be provided free of charge to guests or may be charged for.
But in addition to this, fishing friendly accommodation should also include some, or even all, of the following facilities:
• a drying room
• facilities for washing fishing gear
• a secure tackle room for rod and equipment storage
• a separate fridge for storing fishing bait
• boat hire (where required)
• loan/hire of fishing equipment (if required)
• nearby bait/tackle shop
• facilities for gutting and preparing fish
• a fridge/freezer for the catch
• fishing school on-site
• laundry services
• WiFi
We also like to see fishing information and advice offered (either directly in the proprietors website, or provided directly on arrival at the accommodation), advice on:
• fishing in the local area (+maps and printed guides)
• daily weather forecast
• local slipways/boat launching sites (where relevant)
• tide tables (where relevant)
• local permits and licences (+help with obtaining these)
• ghillie and guiding services
