GERMANY: A taste of prison life, or a normal hotel room?
The Alcatraz Hotel in Kaiserslautern, in Southwest Germany is another converted prison – the twist here is that they offering both cell-style and conventional guest bedrooms and suites, so if you fancy a taste of prison life this is the place for you!
In the cell-style rooms, you'll be able to taste just a bit of what it's actually like to spend a night in a prison cell due to the barred windows, heavy metal door, original prison beds and in-cell washbasin/toilet. If desired, and for an even fuller effect, breakfast can be served through the hatch of the original prison door! Those who prefer more conventional comforts can opt for the larger and well-furnished conventional 'comfort' bedrooms or suites, which all also feature an en-suite bathroom and all mod cons.
Alcatraz Hotel is located near the Japanese Garden in the centre of Kaiserslautern, at the edge of the Pfälzer Wald forest. The hotel has its own restaurant and the Hinter Gittern Bar (Behind Bars) is available for rounding off the day with a few drinks, before escaping to your quiet cell or comfort bedroom.
