The bedroom has a balcony which surrounds the entire building. This is a extremely popular property and needs to be booked a very long time in advance!

Towers as holiday accommodation

There are a huge variety of towers now converted to become some sort of holiday accommodation, most will have not been originally built to be lived in. Today many of these have been renovated, added to, modified or absorbed into later buildings and now serve as self-catering holiday homes, bed and breakfasts or small hotels. Some of the sort of holiday towers you'll come across are:

• Pele towers (or peel towers), which were small fortified tower houses or keeps, built to withstand short sieges and to act as a lookout point. They are mostly found in the Scottish Marches on the Scottish/English borders and in Northern England. Pele towers are usually an oblong or square building of three storeys, often with a tunnel vaulted ground floor with no windows, used for storage. The flat roof was normally battlemented and was used as a lookout point. Some Pele towers were built onto churches so they could act as a combined pele tower/bell tower.

• Castle towers and turrets, really speak for themselves as a part of a large fortified building, towers (or keeps) were a vital part of any defensive castle. These days many have been converted to holiday accommodation. While entire castles may be let out as holiday homes, often a castle tower or turret is let out in isolation as a self-contained unit and such properties are listed on this page.

• Morello towers are small round defensive forts that were built, mainly in the south east of England, during the Napoleonic War and then latterly in many other parts of the British Empire. Their design was inspired by a Corsican fortress at Mortella Point. As they are almost always round buildings we've put Morello towers into our dedicated section here»

• Water towers, the conversion of water towers to living accommodation has become very popular of late and some of these are available as holiday accommodation. With the main feature of these properties being a large solid water tank, and with most not having any original living accommodation, these conversions have often led to ingenious and noteworthy designs, often turning what might have become an ugly eyesore into a construction of real architectural merit.

• Clock towers are another type of building that has been regularly converted to include holiday living quarters, some are freestanding others form part of a church or municipal building like a town hall. If you are choosing a clock tower with a working clock as your holiday home, just make sure any chimes will not disturb your relaxation!
