Terms, abbreviations and qualifications for shooting breaks and holidays
BASC – The British Association for Shooting and Conservation.
CPSA – the English National Governing body for Clay Target Shooting.
Clay shoots – saucer-shaped disks (of limestone and pitch) are launched, at a variety of speeds and angles, from machines called 'traps'; these are used as targets for year-round shooting.
Simulated game shooting – closed season shoots using 'clays' and simulation equipment to replicate a driven game shoot.
GNAT – remote controlled target shooting system using a small aircraft which is a scaled down version of a military target drone.
Game shooting – live quarry shooting, in a number of styles:
Driven – where 'beaters', walk through woodland 'drives', and the game birds go on ahead of the beating line. Shooters, 'guns', are positioned at the point the birds will take flight.
Walked-up & rough-shooting – where one or more guns walk through a game area and shoot as birds are flushed from cover. Rough-shooting is normally carried out in small groups.
Wildfowling – wild duck and geese hunting on tidal marshes, estuaries and foreshores.

Travel-Quest top tips for shooting holidays
• It's recommended that novices start with clay shooting at a clay ground where they can learn to shoot with expert instruction, without the need to have their own gun or to hold a shotgun licence.
• Even if just clay shooting, make sure you're covered by insurance, be it provided by the shooting ground or something you buy for yourself.
• Shoots will insist all guns have adequate public liability insurance through a recognised field sports organisation such as the BASC or CPSA.
