WHAT IS A FOLLY? |
An architectural folly, sham or 'eyecatcher' can be defined as a building constructed just for decoration; built as a conversation piece, to commemorate an event or person, or to add interest to a view. These sorts of 'true' folly were built with no other purpose in mind and were very popular in C18th and C19th England, although follies can be found right across Europe.
Later buildings referred to as follies may have secondary uses such as living accommodation or storage but are still predominantly decorative.
Follies are often quirky, extravagant constructions built to appear as if some other building. They can take many forms; castles, churches and towers, Roman or Chinese temples, forts, Egyptian pyramids and ruins are all popular.
Some follies, known as 'famine follies', were commissioned as a type of poor relief, to provide employment during famines like the Irish potato famine.
Many of these unusual buildings have now been converted to provide living accommodation, some of which is let out as unique holiday rentals. |
