ARTICLE:

What to look for from a shopping break

You'll get a lot of results on a Search Engine search for 'shopping breaks', but annoyingly a lot of those aren't really offering anything more than proximity to the shops and a standard short break package! We feel a shopping break should offer shoppers more than that and these are the breaks we endeavor to list on Travel-Quest.

So what else makes it a good shopping package? We'll take a great shopping location as read; here are some of the other things we look for when reviewing sites/offers:

• A good pre-shopping breakfast to set you up for the day. Take a full breakfast and you might not need to stop for lunch, don't waste good shopping time! (Although we do appreciate that for some people lunch is part of the whole 'event' too.)

• Vouchers, discount cards and special deals, if your aim is a bargain or two. Some packages are more generous than others, so compare carefully and also remember that you may be paying indirectly for some of the discounts through the package price (that can still be well worth it, but isn't always!).

• A personal shopper service, this will most usually be an extra, but can be invaluable if you're after some extra special shopping.

• Pre-shopping consultations, colour guidance, specialist advice, fashion shows, demos and the like are always welcome.

• Local knowledge, this is where small local hotels can win out over big chains or more anonymous packages, hotel staff or tour guides who really do know the local shopping area are worth their weight in gold.

• Collection services that pick up your purchases from the shops, you might get these in higher end packages.

• Post shopping services like foot massage, afternoon tea, wine, late check out, luggage storage etc.

• Free WiFi, essential for pre-shopping research, to find out who's got sales on or which shop stocks those particular shoes you're after.

• Free parking, particularly important if you're shopping in a traditional shopping area where parking can be difficult and pricey.

• Travel deals for people who don't want to drive.

• Special openings, not that common but we have seen some packages/tours where early/late opening has been offered.

• Free gifts!
