UK: Whale and dolphin watching day tours
Day sea safari tours watching dolphins and whales in their natural environment
from Falmouth in Cornwall. The trip allows guests to view these majestic marine mammals in their natural habitats. Guests might encounter the bottlenose, common or Risso’s dolphins and may also spot other animals such as porpoises, basking sharks, minke and pilot whales, atlantic grey seals and sea birds. The tour uses a 12 seater rigid inflatable with twin engines, the boat cruises up to 30 knots and features a spotting tower and forward facing jockey seats. The trip is available all year round with at least two dates per month (most often Fridays and Saturdays). This day package also features free entry to the local Maritime Museum.
An opportunity to get involved in whale, dolphin and porpoise research – the public is invited to take part in surveys around the UK as part of the annual 'National Whale and Dolphin Watch' set up by the Sea Watch Foundation (a registered marine environmental research charity who work to improve the conservation and protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises in British and Irish waters). The data collected will help develop a snapshot of dolphin, whale and porpoise distribution around the UK.
Regular observers and survey training courses
There are also opportunities to become a Sea Watch Regular Observer as well as taking a short course to learn about British cetaceans and how to survey for them. The courses will consist of illustrated lectures, video presentations, headland watches and boat surveys in the Cardigan Bay 'Special Area of Conservation', well-known for the presence and high sighting frequency of bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoises and grey seals.
For more information see the Sea Watch Foundation website.
