Coastal villas for beach, activity & watersports holidays

The hot South coast with its glorious sunshine, magnificent sandy beaches, warm sea, watersports and nightlife are the main draw for many; the Costa Brava, Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol are still top destinations. Villas are increasingly popular in these areas, often now winning out over hotels. Many of these are within complexes (urbanizaciones) which offer facilities like swimming pools, tennis courts, games rooms, shops, bars, gyms and spas. If you are after an activity holiday these complexes will often make life easy by providing equipment hire (and sometimes instruction) for surfing, scuba diving, jet skiing, windsurfing, paragliding, kite surfing and cycling.

But if you're after somewhere quieter try the lesser known regions of the Costa Almeria (in South East Andalucia) with its relatively unspoiled coastline; or the Costa de la Luz (in South West Andalucia) boasting long sandy beaches, pretty fishing ports and numerous protected coastal reserves, as well as some modern resorts popular with the Spanish themselves.

Golf deserves a special mention as it's one of Spain's top tourist activities with year-round appeal. In the South of the country the choice of courses is such that a self-catering golf holiday can be simple to arrange. The Costa del Sol remains top-dog, with most golf per square km, but the Costa Brava is up-and-coming and the Girona region has some of the best courses in Europe. When choosing your destination remember that July and August can get very hot and you may want head further North; for a autumn, spring, or even winter, golf break the Algarve is ideal.

Inland & in the mountains

No part of Spain's Southern coastline has escaped tourism, yet you only have to drive a short distance inland to find traditional villages with restored farmhouses and rural cottages available to rent direct from the owners via our search pages.

Central Spain (the regions of Castilla y Leon, Castilla La Mancha and Extremadura) is made up of wild unspoiled natural landscapes and culturally rich towns. It has some fabulous walking and cycling country, many nature reserves and protected areas, as well as Moorish castles and historic medieval towns to explore.

The mountains of the Picos de Europa in the North, the Pyrenees on the border with France, and the central Sierra Nevada, all attract outdoor lovers, from hikers to rock climbers and mountaineers. In the winter the ski resorts of the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada attract skiers, boarders and snowshoers. Self catering accommodation in the mountains can range from traditional stone built farmhouses to alpine-style chalets or ski resort apartments.

Accommodation for Spanish city breaks
Madrid, Barcelona and Seville are popular city break destinations throughout the year and self-catering accommodation will usually be in apartments or aparthotels. City accommodation, especially in Barcelona, fills up quickly so advance booking is essential.
