SEARCH TIPS: MAP READING, NAVIGATION & ORIENTEERING

The definitions ...

map and compassThis Travel-Quest section concentrates on holidays, courses and short breaks offering instruction in the skills of map-reading, navigation and orienteering. Courses that deal with the use of maps, compass work and the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices.

The section is within our walking, hiking and trekking category, so 'navigation' is restricted to land based, and in particular, mountain navigation. It also covers winter navigation so will include courses that deal with map-reading in the ice and snow conditions encountered by ski mountaineers, winter climbers and winter walkers. For water-based, river, lake and ocean navigation courses see our water activity sections, here.

Courses will often set users up to create from scratch their own walking holidays or mountain trekking trips, wherever they might want to go in the world. However there are also many, many pre-prepared self-guided walking and hiking trips on offer, these will generally provide maps and routes, but good map-reading and navigation skills are generally also required – we have a great selection of this sort of trip here.

Orienteering holidays

This section also covers orienteering holidays and courses. Orienteering is a specialist map-reading and navigation sport or activity, where the aim is for participants to navigate between several control points marked on a dedicated orienteering map. It can be enjoyed as a fun recreational activity for all ages, or as a competitive sport. Orienteering can take place anywhere, be it remote moorland and forest, a city park or even urban streets. Many places have permanent orienteering courses set up to be used at any time.
